Waitrose may close Cardiff city centre branch

10 February 2017

Waitrose is considering closing its only store in Cardiff city centre on Queen Street.

Thirty four people are currently employed in the store which opened in 2011.

The company says it has found trading difficult in the six years it has been open.

James Armstrong, Corporate Communications Manager for Waitrose, says “We opened with every intention of being in the area for a long time.” He says Waitrose have found it harder than expected to make a profit and “like every business we have to make these tough decisions”.

Mr Armstrong added that closing the Queen Street branch is “still just a proposal” and Waitrose will hold talks with all thirty four members of staff over the next few weeks before making a final decision.

The Queen Street branch is one of six that may be closed next summer. Waitrose says it will open eight new stores but none of these will be in Wales. It says if the Queen Street store does close, the company will try to find other roles for the employees.
