Life sentence for Matalan double murderer

28 February 2017

A man who murdered his ex-girlfriend and her new partner outside Matalan in Cardiff where they worked has been sentenced to life in prison at Cardiff Crown Court.

Andrew Saunders, 21, will serve a minimum of 23 years in jail for the killing in September last year.

Zoe Morgan, 21, and Lee Simmons, 33, were walking to the store when they were attacked by Mr Saunders who pleaded guilty to the murders.

Sentencing Mr Saunders Justice Nicola Davies said it was a “savage and senseless” attack.

She said it involved a “significant degree of planning” as Mr Saunders has researched how to kill on the internet and purchased two large knives.

In a statement Zoe Morgan’s family said:

“Zoe and her partner Lee could have had bright and happy future together and will miss out on so much.

“Our lives have changed forever and things will never be the same again.

“No matter how long this evil individual gets in prison, it will make no difference to the life sentence that we have until we die”

Kelly Huggins from the Crown Prosecution Service Wales said:

“This was a brutal, unprovoked attack.

“As he brutally attacked them he also showed no concern for members of the public who were subjected to a frightening scene of violence.”

Lee Simmons family also issued a statement saying:

“No sentence or punishment will ever compensate for the loss of Lees life.

“Our family are bitterly disappointed with today’s sentence. The whole family’s been left devastated by this horrific and unprovoked crime.”
