Barry postcode is best place to live in Wales

3 March 2017

An area in Barry has been named as the best place to live in Wales, according to a new study.

The east of Barry, including Cadoxton and Palmerstown, was crowned Wales’s most desirable area.

The study by the Centre for Economics and Business Research ranked areas based on a number of factors, including good schools, affordable housing and access to green spaces.

Central Cardiff, including Cathays, Roath, Splott and Adamsdown, was in 2nd place.

More than half of the most desirable places to live in Wales are in the Cardiff area, compared to just two in 2015.

The CEBR say the increase in Cardiff postcodes is due to “shorter working hours and shorter commuting times as well as access to better local schools.”

But Penarth, which was ranked 3rd two years ago, has dropped out of the top ten.

Researchers examined a number of data sources to arrive at the final rankings, including the 2011 Census, the General Land Use database and releases from the Office for National Statistics.

The full top ten in Wales:

  1. CF63 – Barry (incl. Cadoxton and Palmerstown)
  2. CF24 – Cardiff (incl. Cathays, Roath and Adamsdown)
  3. SA1 – Central Swansea
  4. SA5 – Swansea
  5. SA72 – Pembroke Dock
  6. CF3 – Cardiff East (incl. Rumney, St Mellons and Llanrumney)
