A salon owner in Pontcanna has started a petition to make short-stay parking available, saying lack of space is affecting her business.
Joanne Scott, who has owned the Feet and Face Place for 24 years, wants Cardiff Council to make residents-only parking open to other people during the day.
She says the council recently increased residents-only parking in the area and also put in double yellow lines in spaces where they did not exist before. The hours for resident-only parking are 8am-10pm.
Ms Scott told CJS News, “It’s become very difficult for myself and my staff to park, plus the other businesses in the area, we’re all having the same problem… we get people who have been trying to park for 25 minutes phoning and having to reschedule their appointments and come in another day.”
She added if the situation did not change, it could affect the future of her business, and was already affecting her revenue.
One of her customers, Gaynor Connelly, said she came in early to her appointments to make sure she could park: “Everywhere I’ve been lately has got the permit holders only. I travelled round and round for 20 minutes to get a space…I can’t get the bus, so I have to drive in.”
Neil MacLeod, owner of the Fabric Mill in Kings Road supports the petition and said he needed his customers to be able to park close to his shop, as they have to carry furniture in and out. “I notice that customers tell me they’re having problems coming in to see me, and that has had significant effect on footfall and therefore business.”
The petition has been online for four days and already has 50 signatures.
Cardiff Council say they consulted businesses and residents before increasing the residents’ parking. The council said the changes were to dissuade commuters from parking in the area and walking into the city centre. The council added it was looking into all possible solutions to increase options for more parking spaces for businesses and their customers.
