Y Mochyn Du pub ‘has lost its Welsh identity’

9 February 2018

Drinkers at a well-known pub in Cardiff claim it has lost its Welsh identity after being sold.

Y Mochyn Du in Sophia Gardens was known for its support of Welsh with language lessons held there and regulars and staff speaking the language.

It was sold to a pub chain and has been renamed as the Brewhouse & Kitchen.

There has been an outcry on social media, with Ynys Mon Assembly Member Rhun ap Iorwerth calling the change an “insult” and other Twitter commentators criticising the chain naming one of its beers Mochyn Du an “English-style ale”.

Brewhouse & Kitchen’s Chief Executive Officer Kris Gumbrell said the pub would continue to support its Welsh heritage, and a statement said the pub had also been given the Welsh title of Bradgy a Chegin.

Former pub regular Gwion Ifor is one of the complainants. He said there was a lack of research carried out and the Welsh translation of the name on the building was a token gesture. He said: “A lot of people feel they’ve lost the identity of the pub.”

Mr Gumbrell added that some staff are Welsh-speakers and others would be supported and encouraged to learn Welsh.
