Some locals are concerned about the impact that a redevelopment of a 0.66 acre site could have.
Planning permission is being considered by the Council, who received a request to demolish the trees in front of Suffolk House on Romilly Road due to “root damage” which had impacted a nearby wall.
The council originally agreed to sell the premises due to the “poor condition and high cost of outstanding repair”.
Locals have held public meetings in opposition to the move. A document published by them refers to “ancient and magnificent Copper Beech, Limes, Holm Oak and Sycamore trees” in front of the House, which would be demolished.
The original application was made in June 2017, and the Council committee met to discuss it in February 2018.
