Disabled cyclists need to have more involvement in consultations for new cycle routes, according to a cycling charity.
Cardiff charity Pedal Power provide specialist adapted bikes for disabled people. They have said not all routes across Cardiff cater for their specialist bikes and want Cardiff Council to listen to the needs of disabled cyclists.
Cardiff Council recently announced a ten million pounds programme to improve cycling infrastructure across the capital.
Pedal Power say they want to be involved in consultations for these plans going forward. Tony Hendrickson from the charity has said: “It’s important that we feel consulted, we’re part of that dialogue. But it’s especially important people who use the adapted biked feel are part of the consultation.”
“It’s important very much for their own safety, but also for their inclusion so they feel able to go out on their bikes safely around Cardiff as part of the new infrastructure”, Mr Hendrickson added.
According to Cardiff Council’s website, the council’s new cycle route plans are a “step change in provision for cycling, providing residents with wide, 2 way cycling routes the are properly segregated from traffic on busy roads and connect communities with the city centre and other key destinations.”
