Stephen Doughty, the Labour MP for Cardiff South, says plans to build 200 flats in Cardiff Bay could cause serious problems in the area.
The Dolffin Quay development has been proposed by Associated British Ports (ABP).
The twenty-story building would have 218 one, two and three bed flats. But the proposal has only allowed for 60 parking spaces.
Mr Doughty says many people are worried about this.
He says “I’ve been contacted by residents from a number of the adjacent residential developments and also others who work and live in the Bay who have a significant amount of concern.
“The overall response I’m getting so far is significantly opposed to the development as it stands at the moment.
“To be clear, people are not opposed to more development at the Bay … but it’s about the right sort of development at the right size and with the right infrastructure.”
He also says he is worried the flats will be too expensive.
“My second major concern is the availability of affordable housing. We’ve had a lot of very expensive high cost developments that actually price a lot of local people and young people and first time buyers out of the market.
“I want to see more affordable homes made available in Cardiff not more multi-million pound apartments that are only accessible to the very richest.”
ABP are submitting planning permission for the site in the next few months.
They defended their parking plans saying:
“The proposals have been carefully designed following continuous dialogue with the local highway authority and in line with the Council’s planning policy requirements which seek to minimise car parking provision within the central area.
“We are continuing to work with the Council to ensure that existing car parking restrictions in the area will restrict any potential over spill parking onto neighboring roads created by new residents or visitors.”
