Commuter anger after Cardiff to Newport train service reduced

13 February 2018

A commuter has said she felt like “cattle” on a train running between Newport and Cardiff after services were reduced.

On average there will be two less trains an hour for the next fortnight running between the cities because of rail upgrades. No extra carriages have been added to the remaining services.

Arriva Trains Wales and Great Western Railway, who operate services on the route, said they have no additional carriages available at the moment.

But people have criticised what they have said is an “awful service”.

The number of services have been reduced because of work on Network Rail’s electrification plan on the Cardiff to London route.

Network Rail said they are working closely with their partners Arriva Trains Wales and Great Western Railway to deal with the disruption.

Sarah Morse has been commuting for more than six years from Bristol and has experienced problems between Cardiff and Newport.

She said: “Yesterday was one of the most problematic commutes I’ve had to be honest. Cattle actually have a better journey.

“They know their services are down but they didn’t put on any extra carriages. So the train pulled in at Newport and it was already full. It was just packed.

“I have raised a complaint with them and they say we can’t put anymore carriages on. You can. It wasn’t unforeseen, it’s been known for a month that this was happening. It’s bizarre.”

Mrs Morse said the changes to the service haven’t been communicated well enough.

Customers have been urged by Network Rail and train operators to check their journeys before travelling.

The maintenance period will run until Sunday February 25th.
