Concerns over new businesses on Whitchurch Road

17 February 2017

A local resident has raised concerns over three new businesses which have applied for licenses from Cardiff City Council on Whitchurch Road.

The applications are for cafes or bars – all on sites that used to be take-away outlets or shops.

The council have so far approved one license at number 11-13, which will be turned into a bar called The Black Beetle.

Graham Stewart lives just off Whitchurch Road, and says there are already parking problems in the area. He told CJS News that because it is not clear where residential parking starts, people often park on his road. He says if a new bar opens just down the street the problem will only get worse.

The Liberal Democrat Councillor for Gabalfa, Ed Bridges, says new businesses will be good for the road and will attract new people. He says he wants new businesses that open on Whitchurch Road to be of a high quality so that there are “not too many take-aways”, because he thinks the lack of diversity of businesses is a problem.

In response to Mr Stewart’s concerns about parking, Councillor Bridges says he agrees that the current system is confusing, and says the Council are currently reviewing parking in the area.

The two other applications for licenses on Whitchurch Road have not yet been approved. One application is for a cafe with proposed opening hours from 8am until 11pm. The second application is for a restaurant at 188 Whitchurch Road.
