Confusion over Cardiff Christmas tree

27 January 2017

It’s almost February but a Christmas tree in Cardiff still hasn’t been taken down.

The Christmas tree outside the Hilton hotel in the city centre is still above the hotel’s entrance – more than a month after everybody unwrapped their presents.

But it’s emerged there’s confusion over who is actually responsible for it.

The Hilton have told CJS News the tree doesn’t belong to them. They say it’s the responsibility of Cardiff Council.

But Cardiff Council have said the tree isn’t their responsibility either.

One shopper said: “I just think it’s really lazy because it’s almost February.

“I work in a card shop and we’re already getting ready for Valentine’s Day”

Another passer-by said:

“I mean, it should really be taken down but the fact that it’s still up makes it looks more humorous when you walk in to town”.

It follows another Christmas tree row in the city when Cardiff Council was criticised for not having a Christmas tree in time for the city’s Christmas lights switch-on.

They also apologised after announcing a 40m artificial tree covered in baubles would be on display outside Cardiff Castle.

In fact, the council had ordered a 40ft tree from China costing  £30,000 over a 3 year lease. Cardiff Council said the installation will save tax-payers £5,000 compared to previous years.
