Council blocks plans for late night beer garden license

Roath residents have won their application to stop local bar Cameo extending the opening hours of their beer garden.

The residents who live on Bangor Street, which is behind the bar, have complained that the beer garden is having a direct impact on their lives due to the noise levels.

They’ve been campaigning to stop the bar’s owners using the beer garden after 9pm.

Cardiff Council’s licensing committee today upheld their objections and said the beer garden has to close at 9pm.

Roath resident, Frances Dredge says “It was very refreshing to see that committee listen to our objections. Any more extending hours on the licensing would cause so much noise and disturbance, it would tip the balance in favour of the business and be completely unfair on the residents.”

The Cameo Club opened in Roath on Wellfield Road 18 months ago and initially had permission to keep the beer garden open until 8pm.

The closing time was extended by an hour last May.

Roath resident, Rhys Miles Thomas said “I am glad with the decision… because they have already changed the licensing agreement once. I was very worried that in a year’s time we would be sitting here arguing over whether we should move it from 10 to 11 pm. When I first came to Bangor Street it was a really quiet area.”

Cameo Club owner Huw Davies said ‘I will not make a knee-jerk reaction…and will take some advice before deciding whether it is worth an appeal.”
