Plans for a £284m city-wide investment will not come soon enough for Cardiff High School according to a local councillor.
Cardiff Council have agreed the ambitious investment to regenerate schools, but it will not start until 2019.
The proposals, jointly funded with the Welsh Government, will support the rebuilding or expansion of 13 schools, creating more than 2500 new spaces.
However, Liberal Democrat Councillor Bablin Molik, who represents Cyncoed and Lakeside, says Cardiff High School needs urgent action as it is already oversubscribed.
She said that Cardiff High receives more than double the number of applicants than places available.
“What is the council going to do in the meantime to provide places for the students who are going to be applying for places? There aren’t enough places in the city to accommodate them,” she told CJS News.
Cardiff Council do intend to expand the school and create an extra 300 spaces over five years, but not until the full plan begins from 2019 onwards.
The council’s plans aim to accommodate the projected increase in demand for spaces in the city.
The council say they are not currently looking at any issues for Cardiff High School before the investment in 2019, but may consider “interim measures” if these are needed.
