Labour have won all three council seats in Canton – although their share of the vote was significantly down from 2012.
Councillors Susan Elsmore and Ramesh Patel kept their seats with Stephen Cunnah replacing outgoing Labour councillor Richard Cook.
Labour won the seats in 2012 with 51% of the vote share. This time around, they retained the seats but earned just 45% of the vote.
Plaid Cymru significantly increased their share of the vote from 2012. Candidates Rhys Ab Owen, Elin Tudur and John Lowes raised the party’s Canton vote from 20% to 37%.
Labour claim a clear victory although Plaid Cymru believe that Canton is now a “marginal ward”.
Coun Ramesh Patel said that Canton residents have spoken and pledged to continue to listen to their views.
“I am extremely pleased that the residents have voted for us. We will continue to do what we have always done and represent them and help with their issues.
“The problem with Plaid is that they make predictions. They take residents for granted and they try to predict things. I think the residents have spoken.”
Plaid candidate Rhys Ab Owen said the Canton result was a good indicator for the future of Plaid in the ward.
“I’m delighted with the Plaid vote in Canton. It is now a marginal ward and we will keep on working for the next five years.
“My message to Labour is that I hope they will listen to and address the concerns of all residents whatever their political persuasions. I would like to thank all the people who voted Plaid in Canton and promise that we will continue to be active in the community.”
