A former doctor in Llandaff says it’s difficult to access some shops and businesses on the village’s High Street using a wheelchair.
The street in Llandaff has a range of businesses, including restaurants, banks and the local post office.
But many of them – including the post office and Natwest Bank – have no wheelchair access.
Lidi Staffurth, who uses a wheelchair, said “I’ve spoken to the post office who have due-diligence to provide a reasonable access but seem to think that a portable ramp that causes about £100 is not reasonable access. I find that it’s just incredible, it’s really not that difficult and it would make a lot of a different to a group of people who are already marginalised by society.”
The High Street is five minutes away from the spinal unit at Rookwood Hospital. Ms Staffurth says people who are being treated for spinal injuries there are more likely to need wheelchair access and also have limited access to some shops and businesses on the street.
A Conservative councillor in Llandaff, Phillipa Hill-John said: “It’s concerning and we need to look at the Equalities Act where there are difficulties for individuals to get into the premises and to have the same lifestyle choices that we all have.”
Some businesses on the High Street are wheelchair friendly – including Ffandango’s organic food shop.
CJS News approached Natwest Bank and the Post Office for comment.
