Overflowing bin at Roath Recreation Ground

Overflowing rubbish angers Roath Park residents

6 February 2018

There are fears litter will spoil one of Wales’ most popular parks after Cardiff Council removed large bins.

Locals fear the changes at Roath Recreation Ground will increase the amount of litter in the park and say it is already causing the smaller bins to overflow.

They want the council to make sure the park, which was named the best in Wales in 2017, is kept clean.

The council said they would review the situation when the weather improves.

Sports teams and dog walkers used the large bins, but locals said these were removed recently.

Jeremy Sparkes from Penylan said: “The removal of these large bins is causing others to overflow. The removal of a large bin last Thursday reduced total bin capacity by about 40%.”

Mr Sparkes said the large bins were around chest-height and could fit a lot more waste than the other bins.

He added: “The bins were last emptied five days ago and that’s not good enough.”

Howard Nicholls from Roath said he used the larger bins a lot more than the regular ones. He told CJS News: “I walk the dog every day and this is going to make it more difficult to get rid of my rubbish. I’ll make sure I put any waste in the other bins available but you can’t be certain that everyone will do the same, particularly if they’re overflowing.”

In a series of tweets the council said the large bins were removed “because of their size” which made them difficult to empty.

They said the remaining bins would be emptied twice a week until April and then collections would be daily.
