Parents ‘petrified’ about traffic increase on Tremorfa road

5 December 2016

Parents in Tremorfa are too scared to let their children play outside because of a nearby bridge closure diverting traffic down the road.

Two children were knocked down on Clydesmuir Road in June this year and taken to hospital with broken bones.

People say the Beresford Road Bridge closure is making traffic capacity worse.

The bridge was closed for improvements by Network Rail in July and they say the works are necessary.

Stephen Hurley, who has a 9-year-old son, says he’s worried the next time a child is hit it will be “fatal”.

He said: “I’ve got one eye out the window all the time. I can’t relax. I don’t understand why we can’t have a crossing and some decent speed control measures.”

Martine Paterson, another parent who lives on the road, said she’s “petrified” and “didn’t let her child out of the house for two weeks” after the accidents earlier this year.

Steff Greedy, a Plaid Cymru candidate for Tremorfa’s local election next May, said “two children knocked down is two too many. The Council do a safety check every 5 years. This does not take into consideration bridge closures and people using this road as a diversion. Enough is enough”.

Cardiff City Council say Network Rail are responsible for the diversion.

Network Rail say Beresford Road Bridge will be reopened in Spring next year.

Karl Gilmore from Network Rail Wales says reconstruction of the bridge is essential for electrification work.

He said: “We have designed the programme of work to keep the disruption to the local community to a minimum.”
