Tesco’s call centre in Cardiff will close today after 28 years.
The centre on Maes-y-Coed road in Heath will shut as part of what the company calls its transformation plans.
It will move to Dundee, cutting 1,100 jobs in the process.
Regional manager for the shop workers’ union Usdaw Nick Ireland said: “The closure of Tesco Cardiff is a massive blow for our members and for the Cardiff economy.
“Usdaw reps on site fought hard to keep the call centre open, challenging the business case through the consultation period, but once it became clear we couldn’t achieve that, we had to focus on getting the best deal for members and helping them find alternative work.”
He added: “It’s a very sad day” for people at Tesco.
Workers were told in July last year about the plan to close the site.
Mr Ireland said only workers on shift were informed officially and others had to find out the bad news from colleagues.
Tesco has been asked to comment.
