Bowls players in St Mellons are fighting to save their local club from closure.<\/p>\n

Nearly 100\u00a0people have signed a petition to keep St Mellons Bowls Club open.<\/p>\n

Cardiff’s only all-weather bowls green is being bulldozed as part of Cardiff City Council’s plan to redevelop the St Mellons area.<\/p>\n

The council say a new community hub will be built on the site early next year.<\/p>\n

Club secretary Denis Tyner, who’s 76, has been bowling at the club for 25 years and says he is “devastated” by the closure.<\/p>\n

He said he has “tried and tried” to get the council to keep the club open but has “hit a brick wall” and will “stop bowling” as a result.<\/p>\n

Darren Turner, who’s 22, has been playing bowls at the club since he was 7. He says it is\u00a0“disgusting that they would shut the green when I’ve witnessed how much all ages enjoy playing here.”<\/p>\n

Carl Kendrick, who is a Plaid Cymru candidate for next year’s local elections, started the petition and says the number of signatures are “more than [he] expected”.<\/p>\n

He says the club’s closure means\u00a0“not only will there be no winter bowling in Cardiff but there’ll be no facility in this area for the majority of the players to play.”<\/p>\n

He added: “There’s land across the road in the old Enterprise Centre, that could be easily redeveloped without losing the bowling green and everyone can keep on playing in a sport they love.”<\/p>\n

Cardiff Council say full community consultation on the plans\u00a0happened last year and planning permission was granted in August.<\/p>\n

They say they have been closing a number of bowls green across the city to “create more sustainable clubs with larger memberships”.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
