{"id":14980,"date":"2017-01-27T15:12:28","date_gmt":"2017-01-27T15:12:28","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/jomec.co.uk\/cjsnews\/?p=14980"},"modified":"2017-01-27T16:12:56","modified_gmt":"2017-01-27T16:12:56","slug":"cardiff-central-mp-quits-as-shadow-cabinet","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/jomec.co.uk\/cjsnews\/cardiff-central-mp-quits-as-shadow-cabinet\/","title":{"rendered":"Cardiff Central MP quits as shadow Welsh Secretary"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Jo Stevens MP, Labour MP for Cardiff Central, has resigned from the shadow cabinet.<\/p>\n<p>The shadow Welsh Secretary announced her resignation in protest at Labour leader Jermey Corbyn&#8217;s decision to impose a three line whip to vote in favour of triggering the Article 50 Brexit Bill.<\/p>\n<p>Ms Stevens explained her decision in a letter to the Labour leader:<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I believe that leaving [the EU] is a terrible mistake and I cannot reconcile my overwhelming view that to endorse the step that will make exit inevitable, is wrong.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I expect this to be the most important vote I will ever cast as an MP and for me it is a clear issue of principle and conscience.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;When I vote I will be representing my constituents.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;It has been a real honour and a privilege to serve as your Shadow Secretary of State for Wales, the country where I was born, bred, work and live.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">I have resigned from Shadow Cabinet today. My letter to the leader: <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/cED6WgNfeX\">pic.twitter.com\/cED6WgNfeX<\/a><\/p>\n<p>&mdash; Jo Stevens MP (@JoStevensLabour) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/JoStevensLabour\/status\/824987535659130880\">January 27, 2017<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script async src=\"\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<p>Whitchurch and Tongwynlais Labour councillor, Ben Thomas, says the former shadow Welsh secretary has made a difficult decision:<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I think it&#8217;s sensible for Jo Stevens to retire from the Labour shadow cabinet.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I can completely understand Jo&#8217;s position and why she&#8217;s decided to step away from front line politics.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Jo is passionate and holds herself so well regarding this particular issue.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;It would be morally wrong for her to continue in her position if she voted against it.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I believe she&#8217;s doing the right thing for the people that she represents and for the people of Wales&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>Councillor Sarah Merry, Labour councillor for Cathays, says she respects Ms. Stevens&#8217; choice to resign:<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;She&#8217;s made the right decision. Jo is intelligent and principled&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>Councillor Caro Wild, \u00a0Labour councillor for Riverside, says:<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Jo is widely respected for her integrity and principles.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I think most people in Cardiff would agree with her that we cannot support the hard Brexit approach taken by Theresa May&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>It comes a day after Tulip Siddiq resigned\u00a0from her role as frontbencher after Jeremy Corbyn ordered Labour MPs to back the Government Brexit plan.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Jo Stevens MP, Labour MP for Cardiff Central, has resigned from the shadow cabinet.
