Birchgrove Primary are hoping to raise \u00a31,000 to buy a defibrillator for the school which it’s believed to be the first of its kind in the area.<\/p>\n
Parent and school governor, Clare Hopkins, says the medical device\u00a0will be used by the school\u00a0and local community: “Birchgrove is really a very busy hub. It has lots of bars, restaurants, shops and hairdressers so it has a quite a big flow of people on\u00a0a day to day basis.<\/p>\n
“The school in itself has 400 pupils and all the staff so ultimately the use of it will be for a much wider community than the school.”<\/p>\n
Mrs Hopkins says there are plans to place the\u00a0defibrillator at the front of the school so it’s accessible at any time but no definite decisions have yet been made.<\/p>\n
Local Independent councillor for Heath and Birchgrove and Chair of Governors at the school, Fenella Bowden says, as far as she’s aware, this is the first\u00a0defibrillator in the community.<\/p>\n
Councillor Bowden\u00a0says\u00a0“I think it’s very important. Heart disease is indiscriminate but I would also add we do have an ageing\u00a0demographic in this part of the\u00a0ward.<\/p>\n
“Things like heart attacks can happen anywhere and to be able to provide that defibrillator to us is vitally important.”<\/p>\n
According to Welsh Hearts charity: “In Wales there are approximately 8000 sudden cardiac arrests outside hospital each year. It\u2019s shocking that the survival rate is only 3%. Where an AED or Defibrillator is used, the survival rate is 50\u00a0%<\/strong>.<\/p>\n \u201cUnfortunately, there are not enough defibrillators in Wales or trained people to give victims the best chance of survival during those first few critical minutes.”<\/p>\n The school have so far raised \u00a3285 and plan to hold fundraising events later this month.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":" Birchgrove Primary are hoping to raise \u00a31,000 to buy a defibrillator for the school which it’s believed to be the first of its kind in the area.
