{"id":15815,"date":"2017-02-14T14:00:26","date_gmt":"2017-02-14T14:00:26","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/jomec.co.uk\/cjsnews\/?p=15815"},"modified":"2017-02-14T14:05:31","modified_gmt":"2017-02-14T14:05:31","slug":"campaign-to-get-drivers-to-overtake-horses-safely-nears-1000-signatures","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/jomec.co.uk\/cjsnews\/campaign-to-get-drivers-to-overtake-horses-safely-nears-1000-signatures\/","title":{"rendered":"Campaign to get drivers to overtake horses safely nears 1000 signatures"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>A petition calling for the Welsh Government to educate drivers\u00a0on overtaking horses safely is nearing 1000 signatures.<\/p>\n<p>Jo Lovell from Penarth (pictured above far left) said she was inspired to start the petition after her 13-year-old daughter was thrown off her horse when\u00a0a car passed\u00a0them at speed.<\/p>\n<p>She says: &#8220;It knocked [my daughter&#8217;s] confidence&#8230;The driver didn&#8217;t even stop, didn&#8217;t even look back to see the consequences of what he&#8217;d done.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Now she wants an annual campaign from the Welsh Government, similar to Drink and Drive Awareness campaigns, to get drivers to pass &#8216;Wide and Slow&#8217;.<\/p>\n<p>Mrs Lovell says the campaign is necessary because &#8220;people don&#8217;t know what to do. Some people think &#8216;I&#8217;ll go fast to get past it&#8217;, other people think &#8216;I&#8217;ll beep to let you know that I&#8217;m there&#8217; but those are all things that frighten the horses and cause really dangerous situations.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-lang=\"en\">\n<p dir=\"ltr\" lang=\"en\">Jo Lovelle from <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/Penarth?src=hash\">#Penarth<\/a> has started a petition for more education on passing <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/horses?src=hash\">#horses<\/a>. Her daughter was knocked off due to careless driving <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/aKtJ2IqlUp\">pic.twitter.com\/aKtJ2IqlUp<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 Sarah Gough (@sarahgoughy) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/sarahgoughy\/status\/831456506948227072\">February 14, 2017<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script async src=\"\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<p>She\u00a0plans to get a couple of thousand signatures over the next year to &#8220;really show the Welsh Assembly that it&#8217;s an issue for a lot of people&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>The petition says:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><em>&#8220;In more urban communities (e.g. the commuter belt around Cardiff), there is a volume of traffic using country lanes, either as a shortcut or main access route.<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><em>In other parts of Wales (e.g. Carmarthen and Pembrokeshire) there is an annual influx of holidaymakers with little experience of encountering horses on the roads.<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><em>The voice of equestrians is not being heard.&#8221;<\/em><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>There is also a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.change.org\/p\/uk-govt-make-it-law-to-pass-by-a-horse-wide-and-slow-and-abide-by-our-hand-signals\">UK wide petition<\/a>\u00a0lobbying the House of Lords to &#8220;make it law to pass wide and slow and abide by horse riders and signals&#8221;.
