{"id":15839,"date":"2017-02-14T15:23:44","date_gmt":"2017-02-14T15:23:44","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/jomec.co.uk\/cjsnews\/?p=15839"},"modified":"2017-02-14T15:24:38","modified_gmt":"2017-02-14T15:24:38","slug":"charity-wants-to-use-music-to-help-people-with-dementia","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/jomec.co.uk\/cjsnews\/charity-wants-to-use-music-to-help-people-with-dementia\/","title":{"rendered":"Charity wants to use music to help people with dementia"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>A Cardiff charity says the Welsh Government should add live music to its new dementia plan.<br \/>\n<!--more--><\/p>\n<p>This follows the Welsh Government&#8217;s launch of a Dementia Strategy Action Plan (DSAP) to deal with &#8220;inequalities experienced by people with dementia&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>Music in Hospitals\u00a0organises concerts for older patients and care home residents featuring songs from their youth. It says the Welsh Government needs to value live performances as much as traditional dementia treatments.<\/p>\n<p>Rose Widlake, Development Officer for Music in Hospitals, says that for dementia sufferers &#8220;musical memory is one of the last things to go.&#8221; She also says that live performances help\u00a0to &#8220;unlock&#8221; dementia patients &#8220;in a way that medicine and prescribed treatments\u00a0don&#8217;t&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>Miss Widlake also says while live music\u00a0is &#8220;not a front line service&#8221;, anyone who visits a care home or hospital &#8220;would see that it&#8217;s vital&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>She says the performances, which encourage the audience to sing along, give\u00a0patients a chance to interact with one another.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Just because they have dementia, it doesn&#8217;t mean they don&#8217;t have interests like music and the arts.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Speaking at the launch last month,\u00a0Health Secretary Vaughan Gething said: \u201cNo two people with dementia, or those that support them, will have identical needs.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>He also spoke about his\u00a0aims for the plan, saying it will consider &#8220;all the ways in which we can affect people\u2019s experience of living with dementia&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>The Welsh Government\u00a0says public\u00a0consultation for the DSAP is still open so there is time for groups to respond to it.
