{"id":16161,"date":"2017-02-21T15:00:27","date_gmt":"2017-02-21T15:00:27","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/jomec.co.uk\/cjsnews\/?p=16161"},"modified":"2017-02-21T15:30:20","modified_gmt":"2017-02-21T15:30:20","slug":"risk-of-canopy-crisis-point-if-more-trees-arent-planted-in-wales","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/jomec.co.uk\/cjsnews\/risk-of-canopy-crisis-point-if-more-trees-arent-planted-in-wales\/","title":{"rendered":"Risk of &#8220;canopy crisis point&#8221; if more trees aren&#8217;t planted in Cardiff"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Woodland Trust Cymru have\u00a0called for thousands more trees to be planted in Wales.<\/p>\n<p>They\u00a0say Wales has far less woodland\u00a0than most other European countries and only 14% of Welsh land is covered by trees.<!--more--><\/p>\n<p>The Welsh Government say they want to create one hundred thousand hectares of new woodland by 2030.\u00a0This means\u00a05000 new hectares of woodland need to be planted every year.<\/p>\n<p>But Woodland Trust Cymru say only around 1,000 trees are being planted each year.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\" wp-image-16232 aligncenter\" src=\"http:\/\/jomec.co.uk\/cjsnews\/wp-content\/uploads\/Woodland-Infographic-415x394.jpeg\" alt=\"woodland-infographic\" width=\"440\" height=\"416\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The situation in Cardiff is better than the national average, according to the charity. It says the &#8220;tree cover rate&#8221; in the capital is 16%.<\/p>\n<p>But Heini Evans from Woodland Trust Cymru says if new trees aren&#8217;t planted in Cardiff soon &#8220;&#8230;there won&#8217;t be anything to replace our mature trees when they have to be felled&#8221; leading to a &#8220;canopy crisis point&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>She\u00a0says a reduced number of trees will have a negative impact on Cardiff&#8217;s environment, and\u00a0will lead to more flooding and pollution.<\/p>\n<p>Ms \u00a0Evans says Woodland Trust Cymru are concerned about money for future tree planting projects.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;With the current political climate, Brexit and policies changing, our funding is on the fence.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We are actively pushing for a policy that promotes planting trees in the right places to increase woodland across Wales.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The Welsh Government were unavailable for comment.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Woodland Trust Cymru have\u00a0called for thousands more trees to be planted in Wales.
