{"id":16819,"date":"2017-03-07T15:22:29","date_gmt":"2017-03-07T15:22:29","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/jomec.co.uk\/cjsnews\/?p=16819"},"modified":"2017-03-07T15:22:29","modified_gmt":"2017-03-07T15:22:29","slug":"fear-for-safety-puts-people-off-running","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/jomec.co.uk\/cjsnews\/fear-for-safety-puts-people-off-running\/","title":{"rendered":"Fear for safety puts people off running"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Researchers at Cardiff university say safety fears are stopping women from running.<br \/>\n<!--more--><\/p>\n<p>They\u00a0asked more than one hundred new runners who took part in the World Half Marathon Challenge last year about their motivations for starting.<\/p>\n<p>The main barrier to running was work\/life balance with 8 in 10 people saying being too busy prevented them from running.<\/p>\n<p>Having to cross busy roads was also listed as a factor that stopped 12% of people interviewed.<\/p>\n<p>Barriers were different for men and women with men concerned about not achieving targets while some women said they were worried about running in front of others.<\/p>\n<p>Lead researcher Dr Liba Sheeran said:<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The results showed that big events do indeed motivate people to get active and stay active.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;However injuries can be a problem for novice runners with seven out of 10 runners reporting injuries.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\" wp-image-16890 aligncenter\" src=\"http:\/\/jomec.co.uk\/cjsnews\/wp-content\/uploads\/RUN-217x394.jpg\" alt=\"RUN\" width=\"352\" height=\"639\" \/><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Abbie Audrain, 21, who regularly runs in Cardiff says:<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Its so hard if you have a busy lifestyle, if you&#8217;ve got kids and you just don&#8217;t have time.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;In the winter it&#8217;s cold and you&#8217;re running in the dark so you might not feel safe and might not want to do it on your own.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>According to Public Health Wales 56% of adults in Cardiff are considered not of a healthy weight.<\/p>\n<p>NHS Wales say people who are regularly exercise have up to 50% reduced risk of developing diabetes, stroke, heart disease and some cancers.<\/p>\n<p>They say the cost of inactivity in Wales is an estimated \u00a3650 million per year.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Researchers at Cardiff university say safety fears are stopping women from running.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":201,"featured_media":0,"comment_status":"closed","ping_status":"closed","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":[],"categories":[743,744],"tags":[26,419,1333,955],"_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/jomec.co.uk\/cjsnews\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/16819"}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/jomec.co.uk\/cjsnews\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/jomec.co.uk\/cjsnews\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/types\/post"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/jomec.co.uk\/cjsnews\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/users\/201"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/jomec.co.uk\/cjsnews\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/comments?post=16819"}],"version-history":[{"count":7,"href":"https:\/\/jomec.co.uk\/cjsnews\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/16819\/revisions"}],"predecessor-version":[{"id":16916,"href":"https:\/\/jomec.co.uk\/cjsnews\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/16819\/revisions\/16916"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/jomec.co.uk\/cjsnews\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media?parent=16819"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"category","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/jomec.co.uk\/cjsnews\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/categories?post=16819"},{"taxonomy":"post_tag","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/jomec.co.uk\/cjsnews\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/tags?post=16819"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
