{"id":17149,"date":"2017-05-05T13:22:23","date_gmt":"2017-05-05T13:22:23","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/jomec.co.uk\/cjsnews\/?p=17149"},"modified":"2017-05-05T13:22:23","modified_gmt":"2017-05-05T13:22:23","slug":"labour-hold-off-plaid-surge-in-canton","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/jomec.co.uk\/cjsnews\/labour-hold-off-plaid-surge-in-canton\/","title":{"rendered":"Labour hold off Plaid surge in Canton"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Labour have won\u00a0all three council seats in Canton &#8211; although their share of the vote was significantly down from 2012.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Councillors Susan Elsmore and Ramesh Patel kept their seats with Stephen Cunnah replacing outgoing Labour councillor Richard Cook.<\/p>\n<p>Labour won the seats in 2012 with 51% of the vote share. This time around, they retained the seats but earned just 45% of the vote.<\/p>\n<p>Plaid Cymru significantly increased their share of the vote from 2012. Candidates Rhys Ab Owen, Elin Tudur and John Lowes raised the party\u2019s Canton vote from 20% to 37%.<\/p>\n<p>Labour claim a clear victory although Plaid Cymru believe\u00a0that Canton is now a \u201cmarginal ward\u201d.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Coun Ramesh Patel said that Canton residents have spoken\u00a0and pledged to continue to listen to their views. <\/span><\/p>\n<p>\u201cI am extremely pleased that the residents have voted for us. We will continue to do what we have always done and represent them and help with their issues.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe problem with Plaid is that they make predictions. They take residents for granted and they try to predict things. I think the residents have spoken.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Plaid candidate Rhys Ab Owen said the Canton result was a good indicator for the future of Plaid in the ward.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cI\u2019m delighted with the Plaid vote in Canton. It is now a marginal ward and we will keep on working for the next five years.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cMy message to Labour is that I hope they will listen to and address the concerns of all residents whatever their political persuasions.
