{"id":18263,"date":"2017-12-12T17:30:21","date_gmt":"2017-12-12T17:30:21","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/jomec.co.uk\/cjsnews\/?p=18263"},"modified":"2017-12-12T18:51:11","modified_gmt":"2017-12-12T18:51:11","slug":"anger-as-student-flats-replace-green-spaces","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/jomec.co.uk\/cjsnews\/anger-as-student-flats-replace-green-spaces\/","title":{"rendered":"Anger as student flats &#8216;replace green spaces&#8217;"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><b>People in Cardiff say they are concerned about properties built for students replacing the city&#8217;s green spaces.<\/b><!--more--><\/p>\n<p>Two developers have asked Cardiff Council for permission to let rooms to general tenants in Adamsdown and Roath because they say there is a lack of demand from students.<\/p>\n<p>Cardiff Green Party member, Keith Watts says it is a case of private companies profiting off public land.<\/p>\n<p>Mr Watts says: &#8220;In general the community is not happy about having more student flats.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Our concern within the Greens is that it&#8217;s poor quality housing via the back door.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;They can build them more cheaply and more quickly. Then they don&#8217;t have the demand, they swap it into a normal flat, and sell it for a large profit off the back of what was public land and a public recreation space.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;It&#8217;s a private profit off the back of public loss.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Student accommodation is not classed as housing, and it is often cheaper to build as it doesn&#8217;t always have the same obligations for natural light and space.<\/p>\n<p>But Crosslane, one of the student property developers, say they were forced to make the &#8220;difficult decision&#8221; to find a different use for their property because of a lack of demand from students.<\/p>\n<p>If approved by Cardiff Council, the licence will allow them to let out apartments to general tenants for up to 90 days for the next year.<\/p>\n<p>Residents in Adamsdown have launched a petition against another development, saying inner-city green spaces are being sacrificed for more unnecessary student blocks.<\/p>\n<p>More than 400 people have signed the petition opposing the\u00a0Howard Gardens site.<\/p>\n<p>The land was sold off by the council in 2015, and the two-block student development will have more than 1,000 beds if planning permission is granted early next year.<\/p>\n<p>The council has approved plans for more student builds providing a further 2,696 beds.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>People in Cardiff say they are concerned about properties built for students replacing the city&#8217;s green spaces.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":156,"featured_media":0,"comment_status":"closed","ping_status":"closed","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":[],"categories":[743,1],"tags":[],"_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/jomec.co.uk\/cjsnews\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/18263"}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/jomec.co.uk\/cjsnews\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/jomec.co.uk\/cjsnews\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/types\/post"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/jomec.co.uk\/cjsnews\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/users\/156"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/jomec.co.uk\/cjsnews\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/comments?post=18263"}],"version-history":[{"count":21,"href":"https:\/\/jomec.co.uk\/cjsnews\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/18263\/revisions"}],"predecessor-version":[{"id":18430,"href":"https:\/\/jomec.co.uk\/cjsnews\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/18263\/revisions\/18430"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/jomec.co.uk\/cjsnews\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media?parent=18263"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"category","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/jomec.co.uk\/cjsnews\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/categories?post=18263"},{"taxonomy":"post_tag","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/jomec.co.uk\/cjsnews\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/tags?post=18263"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
