Royal Mail’s decision to close their Llanrumney delivery office will cause problems for elderly and disabled people it is claimed.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Royal Mail have said the closure this summer will improve efficiency because the Mount Pleasant Lane site is unfit for purpose.<\/p>\n

They added residents would still receive the same delivery service and that there would be no job losses.<\/p>\n

But Llanrumney’s Labour Councillor said Royal Mail had not taken the interests of local people into account, as they will need to travel at least another mile to the Rumney office instead.<\/p>\n

And one resident, 67-year-old Anthony Hammond said he could not understand the decision.<\/p>\n

“There is no disabled parking there.<\/p>\n

“If you have to go anywhere in Rumney it is extremely difficult, especially for disabled people.”<\/p>\n

Another resident, 63-year-old Angela Proctor, said there would be no way she could get to the Rumney office.<\/p>\n

“With my disability I have difficulty walking long distances.<\/p>\n

“I have to rely on my daughter to take me around, but she works and I would not be able to get to Rumney in the opening hours.”<\/p>\n

Lee Bridgeman, Llanrumney’s Labour Councillor, has doubts over the reasoning behind the move.<\/p>\n

“I can’t see how Royal Mail are going to deal with the extra parcels from Llanrumney, St.Mellons, Trowbridge, and Rumney.<\/p>\n

“The journey to Rumney is difficult for people, the roads are busy and the bus routes are not great.<\/p>\n

“Looking at it, is it more for financial gain rather than for the benefit of their residents.”<\/p>\n

The Royal Mail claim there will be no impact on customers, with the Cardiff North East delivery office having longer opening hours.<\/p>\n

However, both residents and politicians have said they will continue to oppose the Llanrumney closure.<\/p>\n
