Cardiff’s LGBT+ community is too white and too male, according to Pride Cymru’s leader Lu Thomas.<\/strong><\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

Pride Cymru, which supports the LGBT+ community, says\u00a0gay bars and clubs in the city need to do more to include women and people of colour to reflect Cardiff’s diversity.<\/p>\n

Ms Thomas wants to see members of the local gay scene share their thoughts at public sessions to\u00a0get more women, BAME and trans people involved.<\/p>\n

Ms Thomas said: “We are very segregated within our individual communities within the city.<\/p>\n

“There seems to be a societal shift towards sticking to what you know, who you know and what you like.<\/p>\n

“A very small number of people who come to Pride are from our BAME community. It’s tiny.<\/p>\n

“If you go into the gay scene within Cardiff, again, it’s very white and it’s very male so that really needs to be assessed.”<\/p>\n

Abbie Owen, who has worked at gay clubs in Cardiff, said she and other women had been harassed and insulted while working.<\/p>\n

She said: “I feel people need to be better educated about how they act around certain people and not be so rude.<\/p>\n

“They need to learn not to touch people. It’s a shame because because we should be an all-inclusive environment.”<\/p>\n

Meanwhile Ms Thomas said Pride Cymru is hoping to increase the number of people attending its annual Big Weekend event.<\/p>\n

She wants to overtake equivalent organisations’ events in the UK. Currently Pride Cymru is in fifth place after Birmingham and Newcastle.<\/p>\n

Ms Thomas said Wales’ annual Pride event was often forgotten about and she wants to “firmly plant it on the gay calendar”.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
