{"id":19267,"date":"2018-02-16T16:13:52","date_gmt":"2018-02-16T16:13:52","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/jomec.co.uk\/cjsnews\/?p=19267"},"modified":"2018-02-16T16:13:52","modified_gmt":"2018-02-16T16:13:52","slug":"cardiffs-lgbtcommunity-too-white-and-too-male","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/jomec.co.uk\/cjsnews\/cardiffs-lgbtcommunity-too-white-and-too-male\/","title":{"rendered":"Cardiff&#8217;s LGBT+community &#8216;too white and too male&#8217;"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>Cardiff&#8217;s LGBT+ community is too white and too male, according to Pride Cymru&#8217;s leader Lu Thomas.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p>Pride Cymru, which supports the LGBT+ community, says\u00a0gay bars and clubs in the city need to do more to include women and people of colour to reflect Cardiff&#8217;s diversity.<\/p>\n<p>Ms Thomas wants to see members of the local gay scene share their thoughts at public sessions to\u00a0get more women, BAME and trans people involved.<\/p>\n<p>Ms Thomas said: &#8220;We are very segregated within our individual communities within the city.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;There seems to be a societal shift towards sticking to what you know, who you know and what you like.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;A very small number of people who come to Pride are from our BAME community. It&#8217;s tiny.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;If you go into the gay scene within Cardiff, again, it&#8217;s very white and it&#8217;s very male so that really needs to be assessed.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Abbie Owen, who has worked at gay clubs in Cardiff, said she and other women had been harassed and insulted while working.<\/p>\n<p>She said: &#8220;I feel people need to be better educated about how they act around certain people and not be so rude.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;They need to learn not to touch people. It&#8217;s a shame because because we should be an all-inclusive environment.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile Ms Thomas said Pride Cymru is hoping to increase the number of people attending its annual Big Weekend event.<\/p>\n<p>She wants to overtake equivalent organisations&#8217; events in the UK.
