Controversial collars which give electric shocks to dogs should be banned, a dog’s charity has said.<\/p>\n
It is illegal to use shock collars in Wales but not to sell them.<\/p>\n
Some owners\u00a0use them to train their pets – and shock them when they misbehave.<\/p>\n
Welsh Government has been asked to comment.<\/p>\n
The Dogs’ Trust has launched a campaign to ban the collars.<\/p>\n
Paul Carpenter, owner of Black Dog Training in Newport, supported calls for the collars to be banned.<\/p>\n
“It’s absolutely ridiculous, they shouldn’t be allowed,” he said.<\/p>\n
“You can get a better result from a positive reward, making it a game, a fun game.<\/p>\n
“Making it a punishment, they’ll do but they won’t enjoy it.”<\/p>\n
Rachel Casey, from the Dogs’ Trust, said: “It is both unnecessary and cruel to resort to the use of these collars on dogs.<\/p>\n
“This type of device is not only painful for a dog, it can have a serious negative impact on their mental and physical well-being.”<\/p>\n
