{"id":19960,"date":"2018-03-06T17:14:20","date_gmt":"2018-03-06T17:14:20","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/jomec.co.uk\/cjsnews\/?p=19960"},"modified":"2018-03-06T17:14:20","modified_gmt":"2018-03-06T17:14:20","slug":"new-cemetery-plan-as-cardiff-runs-out-of-graves","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/jomec.co.uk\/cjsnews\/new-cemetery-plan-as-cardiff-runs-out-of-graves\/","title":{"rendered":"New cemetery plan as Cardiff runs out of graves"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>Cardiff Council say a new cemetery is needed in Thornhill or it will run out of burial spaces in the city by 2020.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p>There are over 700 burials a year at the\u00a0current Thornhill site, and the council is proposing a new\u00a0cemetery on council-owned land near the M4 motorway.<\/p>\n<p>The proposed new site is 650m from the existing one at Thornhill.<\/p>\n<p>Local and neighbouring councillors have had a briefing about the proposals.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We understand there is obviously a shortage of grave space in the city, and I understand that there needs to be provision for this, but it mustn&#8217;t be to the detriment of the local business, local residents and also the traffic on and off the site,&#8221;\u00a0said Jayne Cowan, Conservative councillor for Rhiwbina.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We need to make sure that the traffic flow is monitored very closely, and that there is adequate screening for the shops and the neighbouring houses,&#8221; she added.<\/p>\n<p>Conservative Councillor for Lisvane, David Walker says he&#8217;s concerned about plans to build the site in a green belt area.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;By tradition, building north of the M4 in that area has been opposed.
