{"id":20128,"date":"2018-03-09T16:33:39","date_gmt":"2018-03-09T16:33:39","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/jomec.co.uk\/cjsnews\/?p=20128"},"modified":"2018-03-09T16:34:40","modified_gmt":"2018-03-09T16:34:40","slug":"residents-unhappy-with-mardy-bridge-work-disruption","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/jomec.co.uk\/cjsnews\/residents-unhappy-with-mardy-bridge-work-disruption\/","title":{"rendered":"Residents unhappy with Mardy Bridge work disruption"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\"><strong><span style=\"font-family: georgia, palatino, serif;\">Residents in Rumney are unhappy at the disruption caused by the closure of a railway bridge.<\/span><\/strong><\/span><!--more--><\/p>\n<p>Mardy Road Bridge is being upgraded in work to upgrade the railway that runs above it.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: georgia,palatino,serif; font-size: 12pt;\">The bridge was closed to road traffic in March last year, and\u00a0will remain closed until autumn 2018.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: georgia,palatino,serif; font-size: 12pt;\">But some locals say that the disruption has lead to congestion, pot holes and longer commutes.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: georgia,palatino,serif; font-size: 12pt;\">Jodie Rauch lives in St Mellons and works in Pengam Green. The old bridge was part of her route\u00a0to drop her son off at school, before going to work.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: georgia, palatino, serif;\">She says the closure of the bridge has almost tripled her commuting time in the morning.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: georgia,palatino,serif; font-size: 12pt;\">&#8220;Before\u00a0the bridge closed, I would drop my son off to\u00a0school for\u00a08.45am, then make my way to work for a 9.00am\u00a0start. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: georgia,palatino,serif; font-size: 12pt;\">&#8220;Now, to make work for\u00a09.00am, I have to leave the house much earlier, drop my son at breakfast club for\u00a08.20am, then\u00a0sit in\u00a0stop-start traffic.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: georgia,palatino,serif; font-size: 12pt;\">She says she now has to travel an extra\u00a0seven miles to work, costing her an extra 250 hours and 2000 miles a year.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: georgia,palatino,serif; font-size: 12pt;\">Mardy Road Bridge had to be demolished and rebuilt in a higher position by Network Rail, in their work to\u00a0electrify the South Wales Mainline railway that runs above it.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: georgia,palatino,serif; font-size: 12pt;\">In a statement Network Rail said:\u00a0 <\/span>&#8220;The reconstruction of Mardy Road Bridge is part of the electrification of the South Wales Mainline railway. A major construction programme is underway to transform the mainline into Cardiff to prepare it for the overhead posts and wires that will power the new electric trains.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: georgia,palatino,serif; font-size: 12pt;\">&#8220;This work requires a full road closure, which from 18th March 2017 until Autumn 2018.
