{"id":20301,"date":"2018-03-13T16:28:49","date_gmt":"2018-03-13T16:28:49","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/jomec.co.uk\/cjsnews\/?p=20301"},"modified":"2018-03-14T09:51:20","modified_gmt":"2018-03-14T09:51:20","slug":"welsh-assembly-to-vote-on-alcohol-pricing","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/jomec.co.uk\/cjsnews\/welsh-assembly-to-vote-on-alcohol-pricing\/","title":{"rendered":"Welsh Assembly votes on alcohol pricing"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>The Welsh Assembly voted through the first stage of minimum alcohol pricing legislation<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p>The measure is aimed at reducing harmful alcohol consumption.<\/p>\n<p>A total of 47 AMs backed the general principles of the bill, with six against and one abstention.<\/p>\n<p>Health Secretary Vaughan Gething said evidence from other countries showed a link between alcohol&#8217;s price and its consumption.<\/p>\n<p>Mr Gething has promised an extra \u00a31m to health boards to tackle substance abuse.<\/p>\n<p><strong>How would the proposed minimum price work?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The minimum price will be calculated by charging a certain amount for every unit of alcohol in a litre, which means stronger alcohol will go up in cost.<\/p>\n<p>If the price is set at 50 pence a two litre bottle of wine at 12.5% will have a minimum price of \u00a312.50 (2 x 12.5 x 0.5).<\/p>\n<p>A shop, pub, or supermarket would not be able to sell any item for less than its calculated price.<\/p>\n<p><strong>What happened in Scotland?\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Scotland passed a similar law five years ago but it will only come into effect this May after alcohol companies challenged the decision.<\/p>\n<p>Legal experts say Scotland winning its case is one of the reasons the Welsh Government introduced the legislation.<\/p>\n<p><strong>What next?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The only political party in Wales who opposed the minimum price were UKIP, who introduced an amendment to the vote<\/p>\n<p>UKIP&#8217;s leader for Wales, Neil Hamilton said: &#8220;The Bill will not produce the desired positive health outcomes for the people of Wales and could have a detrimental impact on vulnerable sections of our communities.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Now the vote has passed, it could become law within a year.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The Welsh Assembly voted through the first stage of minimum alcohol pricing legislation<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":167,"featured_media":0,"comment_status":"closed","ping_status":"closed","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":[],"categories":[743,744,750],"tags":[412,413,443,1543,112],"_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/jomec.co.uk\/cjsnews\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/20301"}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/jomec.co.uk\/cjsnews\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/jomec.co.uk\/cjsnews\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/types\/post"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/jomec.co.uk\/cjsnews\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/users\/167"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/jomec.co.uk\/cjsnews\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/comments?post=20301"}],"version-history":[{"count":28,"href":"https:\/\/jomec.co.uk\/cjsnews\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/20301\/revisions"}],"predecessor-version":[{"id":20451,"href":"https:\/\/jomec.co.uk\/cjsnews\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/20301\/revisions\/20451"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/jomec.co.uk\/cjsnews\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media?parent=20301"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"category","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/jomec.co.uk\/cjsnews\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/categories?post=20301"},{"taxonomy":"post_tag","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/jomec.co.uk\/cjsnews\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/tags?post=20301"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
