{"id":20666,"date":"2018-03-16T14:00:45","date_gmt":"2018-03-16T14:00:45","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/jomec.co.uk\/cjsnews\/?p=20666"},"modified":"2018-12-11T16:17:36","modified_gmt":"2018-12-11T16:17:36","slug":"cardiff-uni-animal-testing-barbaric-and-cruel","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/jomec.co.uk\/cjsnews\/cardiff-uni-animal-testing-barbaric-and-cruel\/","title":{"rendered":"Appeal to Cardiff Uni to stop animal testing"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>An animal rights group has said Cardiff University must stop testing on animals for research and move into the &#8220;modern world&#8221;.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p>Cardiff Animal Rights said it wanted research to be &#8220;humane&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>A Freedom of Information request by CJS News showed\u00a0Cardiff University carried out 46,743 procedures on animals last year.<\/p>\n<p>The university said the welfare of animals used for research is\u00a0&#8220;paramount&#8221; and safeguards are in place.<\/p>\n<p>But a spokeswoman from Cardiff Animal Rights said:\u00a0&#8220;If Cardiff University dropped animal testing and went completely to humane research, we\u2019d back them all the way.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;They need to join medical science in the modern world and help fund and cure diseases without torturing innocent beings in the process.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The number of procedures involving each animal:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Mice &#8211; 42,660<\/li>\n<li>Rats &#8211; 2,130<\/li>\n<li>Rabbits &#8211; 4<\/li>\n<li>Guinea Pig &#8211; 2<\/li>\n<li>Frogs &#8211; 122<\/li>\n<li>Fish &#8211; 1,825<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Charities including Parkinsons UK and Arthritis Research UK have funded animal research at Cardiff University.<\/p>\n<p>In a statement Claire Bale, head of research communications and engagement at Parkinsons UK, said: &#8220;We support the principle of using animals in research to advance our understanding of Parkinson&#8217;s, improve treatments and ultimately find a cure for people living with the condition.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe take the use of animals in research very seriously.\u00a0All research must be carried out in line with strict Home Office regulations and the &#8216;3Rs\u2019 policy \u2013 to reduce, refine and replace the use of animals in research wherever possible.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;This means we never fund research using animals if there is another alternative.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Tom Holder, from the not-for-profit organisation Understanding Animal Research which aims to explain why animals are used for research, said animal testing remains a key part of medical, veterinary and scientific development.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I don&#8217;t think anyone in the scientific community wants to use animals over non-animal methods,&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Obviously, it would be great if we did not need to use animals for research in the future, but I don&#8217;t see that future appearing any time soon.&#8221;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>An animal rights group has said Cardiff University must stop testing on animals for research and move into the &#8220;modern world&#8221;.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":155,"featured_media":0,"comment_status":"closed","ping_status":"closed","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":[],"categories":[746,744],"tags":[1547,26,52],"_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/jomec.co.uk\/cjsnews\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/20666"}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/jomec.co.uk\/cjsnews\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/jomec.co.uk\/cjsnews\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/types\/post"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/jomec.co.uk\/cjsnews\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/users\/155"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/jomec.co.uk\/cjsnews\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/comments?post=20666"}],"version-history":[{"count":14,"href":"https:\/\/jomec.co.uk\/cjsnews\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/20666\/revisions"}],"predecessor-version":[{"id":20749,"href":"https:\/\/jomec.co.uk\/cjsnews\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/20666\/revisions\/20749"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/jomec.co.uk\/cjsnews\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media?parent=20666"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"category","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/jomec.co.uk\/cjsnews\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/categories?post=20666"},{"taxonomy":"post_tag","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/jomec.co.uk\/cjsnews\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/tags?post=20666"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
