{"id":21669,"date":"2018-12-10T17:10:49","date_gmt":"2018-12-10T17:10:49","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/jomec.co.uk\/cjsnews\/?p=21669"},"modified":"2018-12-10T17:10:49","modified_gmt":"2018-12-10T17:10:49","slug":"calls-for-clean-air-charge-in-cardiff-city-centre","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/jomec.co.uk\/cjsnews\/calls-for-clean-air-charge-in-cardiff-city-centre\/","title":{"rendered":"Calls for clean air charge in Cardiff city centre"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>Pressure is mounting on Cardiff Council to introduce a clean air zone in the city centre<\/strong>. <!--more--><\/p>\n<p>If introduced, all vehicles would be charged but campaigners are particularly worried about the impact it would have on cars which account for eighty percent of all traffic pollution across the city.<\/p>\n<p>Rhys Taylor, from the British Lung Foundation Wales, is in favour of introducing a clean air zone charge, claiming there are many benefits.<\/p>\n<p>He said &#8220;evidence shows that people in cities with less congestion and pollution feel much safer when going about their shopping and daily business&#8221;.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_21703\" style=\"width: 306px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><img aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-21703\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-image-21703 size-large\" src=\"http:\/\/jomec.co.uk\/cjsnews\/wp-content\/uploads\/48064176_580364699069179_1069194042044055552_n-296x394.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"296\" height=\"394\" srcset=\"https:\/\/jomec.co.uk\/cjsnews\/wp-content\/uploads\/48064176_580364699069179_1069194042044055552_n-296x394.jpg 296w, https:\/\/jomec.co.uk\/cjsnews\/wp-content\/uploads\/48064176_580364699069179_1069194042044055552_n-113x150.jpg 113w, https:\/\/jomec.co.uk\/cjsnews\/wp-content\/uploads\/48064176_580364699069179_1069194042044055552_n-92x122.jpg 92w, https:\/\/jomec.co.uk\/cjsnews\/wp-content\/uploads\/48064176_580364699069179_1069194042044055552_n-620x827.jpg 620w, https:\/\/jomec.co.uk\/cjsnews\/wp-content\/uploads\/48064176_580364699069179_1069194042044055552_n-68x90.jpg 68w, https:\/\/jomec.co.uk\/cjsnews\/wp-content\/uploads\/48064176_580364699069179_1069194042044055552_n.jpg 720w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 296px) 100vw, 296px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-21703\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Rhys Taylor<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Taylor also explained how higher traffic pollution levels severely endanger children and toddlers who are at a similar height to car exhausts.<\/p>\n<p>But some small business owners in the city are cautious about the campaign as they believe a charge could impact the number of customers coming into town.<\/p>\n<p>But Mr Taylor says businesses have not been affected in countries who have introduced a charge.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Cities with cleaner air actually have a higher footfall than cities like Cardiff which have a problem with congestion and air pollution.&#8221; Taylor claimed this was once again due to people feeling more comfortable spending time in a cleaner environment.<\/p>\n<p>Although support for a clean air zone charge may be on the rise, it is not clear how much the charge would actually be. But Mr Taylor says it&#8217;s the only way forward to deal with pollution.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The cleaner your car is and the more modern your car is, the less you&#8217;ll have to pay&#8221; he said.
