{"id":22507,"date":"2019-02-05T15:38:02","date_gmt":"2019-02-05T15:38:02","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/jomec.co.uk\/cjsnews\/?p=22507"},"modified":"2019-03-12T17:26:42","modified_gmt":"2019-03-12T17:26:42","slug":"plastic-pollution-animal-injuries-at-all-time-high","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/jomec.co.uk\/cjsnews\/plastic-pollution-animal-injuries-at-all-time-high\/","title":{"rendered":"Plastic pollution animal injuries at &#8216;all time high&#8217;"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>The number of animals injured by plastic pollution in Wales has risen by almost 29% in three years.\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p>The new figures, released by RSPCA Wales, indicate that incidents reported to the charity have reached record levels.<\/p>\n<p>There were a total of 27 injuries recorded by the RSPCA last year, covering mammals, birds and reptiles.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">RSPCA Head of Wildlife, Adam Grogan said: \u00a0\u201cThis shocking rise in plastic litter incidents suggests that plastic is a growing threat to animals.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">\u201cFrom seals with deep infected wounds caused by plastic frisbees cutting into their necks, to swans and geese trapped in fishing line or netting, plastic is clearly having an increasing impact on animal welfare.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">\u201cOur latest data sadly reflects the wider litter crisis taking place right now across the globe and action is urgently needed.\u00a0 It\u2019s up to every one of us to do our bit in the war against litter.\u201d<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">This is despite incidents involving animals and general litter going down in the same period.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">Media Officer for the RSPCA, Chris O&#8217;Brien, says it&#8217;s &#8220;an indication as to the levels of plastic that are being used in Wales, and how harmful that can be to animals.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">The charity has highlighted the case of a duck that was starving to death after being found with a plastic ring around its neck\u00a0and beak at a lake in Blaina, near Abertillery.
