Stallholders in Newport market say they are concerned about the future of their businesses as the historic building is redeveloped.<\/p>\n

A \u00a312m redevelopment is due to take place over the next two years, but some traders say they’re unaware of what the future holds for their stalls.<\/p>\n
“It’s hard to make any sense of it at all,” says Dean Beddis, who runs Kriminal Records.<\/p>\n
Newport council has given Loft Co and WRW Construction provisional backing to redevelop the grade two listed building.<\/p>\n
The proposed development would include 80 new apartments above the market.<\/p>\n
In a statement,\u00a0Newport City Council leader Debbie Wilcox welcomed the plans.<\/p>\n
“We are very excited about this opportunity as we see it as protection for, and enhancement of, an historic landmark and, just as importantly, a more secure and brighter future for the
\nmarket.”<\/p>\n
Some traders say the plans don’t protect their interests and claim the proposed layout would reduce the size of their stalls.<\/p>\n
One stall owner said her handbag shop could be less than half the size.<\/p>\n
The plans are expected to be finalised within the next two months with a council meeting next Wednesday to continue their talks.<\/p>\n
