{"id":22795,"date":"2019-02-15T17:27:24","date_gmt":"2019-02-15T17:27:24","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/jomec.co.uk\/cjsnews\/?p=22795"},"modified":"2019-02-15T17:27:24","modified_gmt":"2019-02-15T17:27:24","slug":"mouldy-bread-used-to-feed-birds-poisoning-dogs-in-cardiff","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/jomec.co.uk\/cjsnews\/mouldy-bread-used-to-feed-birds-poisoning-dogs-in-cardiff\/","title":{"rendered":"Mouldy bread used to feed birds &#8216;poisoning&#8217; dogs in Cardiff"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>Pets are being poisoned in Cardiff by mouldy bread used to feed birds\u00a0says city vet Rebecca Fernandez.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p>Ms Fernandez has confirmed it&#8217;s a big problem in Roath Park, where several owners have reported their dogs becoming ill.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;When bread turns mouldy, it produces a toxin that is poisonous to dogs,&#8221; she told CJS News.<\/p>\n<p>Dog owner, Penny Bowers says her dogs are regularly ill because they are eating bread left in parks.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;My dogs are scavengers so periodically they are ill from being in the parks.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;It could be a virus or something like that but I&#8217;m sure that often it must be mouldy bread or mouldy food that&#8217;s put out to birds&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>She says although muzzles on dogs would physically stop them eating mouldy bread, that would be an extreme solution.<\/p>\n<p>Ms Fernandez says &#8220;people need to be more educated about what dogs can and can&#8217;t eat&#8221; and recommends calling the vet immediately if an owner suspects poisoning.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;It could be that the vet wants to examine the animal and check for first signs of sickness, tremors and neurological episodes that we would be most concerned about,&#8221; she said.<\/p>\n<p>Cats, horses and birds are also at risk from eating the toxin.<\/p>\n<p>In a statement, the RSPB UK says they &#8220;would advise that bread only makes up a small part of a bird&#8217;s diet and alternatives to feeding bread are oats, seeds and leafy greens such as lettuce and rocket, peas and sweet corn&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Pets are being poisoned in Cardiff by mouldy bread used to feed birds\u00a0says city vet Rebecca Fernandez.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":190,"featured_media":0,"comment_status":"closed","ping_status":"closed","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":[],"categories":[743,744],"tags":[26,313,390,923],"_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/jomec.co.uk\/cjsnews\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/22795"}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/jomec.co.uk\/cjsnews\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/jomec.co.uk\/cjsnews\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/types\/post"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/jomec.co.uk\/cjsnews\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/users\/190"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/jomec.co.uk\/cjsnews\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/comments?post=22795"}],"version-history":[{"count":12,"href":"https:\/\/jomec.co.uk\/cjsnews\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/22795\/revisions"}],"predecessor-version":[{"id":22892,"href":"https:\/\/jomec.co.uk\/cjsnews\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/22795\/revisions\/22892"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/jomec.co.uk\/cjsnews\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media?parent=22795"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"category","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/jomec.co.uk\/cjsnews\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/categories?post=22795"},{"taxonomy":"post_tag","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/jomec.co.uk\/cjsnews\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/tags?post=22795"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
