{"id":22895,"date":"2019-02-19T11:02:23","date_gmt":"2019-02-19T11:02:23","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/jomec.co.uk\/cjsnews\/?p=22895"},"modified":"2019-02-22T16:06:42","modified_gmt":"2019-02-22T16:06:42","slug":"pet-shops-in-wales-could-be-banned-from-selling-puppies-and-kittens","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/jomec.co.uk\/cjsnews\/pet-shops-in-wales-could-be-banned-from-selling-puppies-and-kittens\/","title":{"rendered":"Pet shops in Wales could be banned from selling puppies and kittens"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>Puppies and kittens could be banned from being sold in shops in Wales, under new plans being considered by the Welsh Government.<!--more--><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>A consultation about banning sales by third-party sellers has been launched today.<\/p>\n<p>It would mean people would only be able to buy pets from licensed dog breeders or rehoming centres like Cat\u2019s Protection or the Royal Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (RSPCA).<\/p>\n<p>There are worries that pet shop animals have poorer welfare standards compared to those from a breeder. For example, they have to get used to lots of different environments and make more journeys.<\/p>\n<p>Between 40,000 and 80,000 puppies and kittens are sold via third parties in Great Britain each year.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/BroadcastCJS\/status\/1097797453682802688\">https:\/\/twitter.com\/BroadcastCJS\/status\/1097797453682802688<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Wales\u2019 Rural Affairs Minister said the \u2018vast majority\u2019 of those buying a new puppy or kitten had the best intentions but it\u2019s not always clear where their new pet has come from or what the conditions are like.<\/p>\n<p>She said: \u201cThis consultation is an opportunity to gather as much information as possible to enable us to make lasting improvements to the welfare of puppies and kittens bred in Wales.
