{"id":23221,"date":"2019-03-01T14:31:13","date_gmt":"2019-03-01T14:31:13","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/jomec.co.uk\/cjsnews\/?p=23221"},"modified":"2019-03-12T12:53:22","modified_gmt":"2019-03-12T12:53:22","slug":"call-for-25p-latte-levy-on-single-use-cups","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/jomec.co.uk\/cjsnews\/call-for-25p-latte-levy-on-single-use-cups\/","title":{"rendered":"Call for 25p &#8216;latte levy&#8217; on single use cups"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>Almost 2,000 people have signed a petition started by Friends of the Earth Cymru to introduce a 25p tax on takeaway cups.\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p><strong>According to Friends of the Earth:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Around 237 million single-use coffee cups and 183 million coffee cup lids are used every year in Wales<\/li>\n<li>320 million single-use cups are used each year for drinks such as for smoothies, milkshakes, and juices<\/li>\n<li>Only 1 in 400 takeaway cups are being recycled<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Catherine Price from Coffee Planet in Cardiff says &#8220;around 10 per cent&#8221; of her customers during the morning rush hour take up the discount that they offer for bringing a reusable mug, but thinks a 25p tax would put off some of her regular customers.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;When you&#8217;re only paying around \u00a32.60 for a flat white and its a very small cup if you&#8217;re going to put 25p onto that&#8230;I think coffee shops are going to lose business.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;If it was 5p or 10p&#8230;then maybe that wouldn&#8217;t deter.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;There&#8217;s a fine line between being economically and ecologically responsible and actually being a business and trying to make money&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>Sean O&#8217;Donavan, who runs the Coffee Bike stall and regularly sells coffee in central Cardiff, told CJS News &#8220;a small percentage&#8221; of his customers bring a reusable mug, but that the number of people who did was &#8220;gradually growing&#8221;.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_23236\" style=\"width: 535px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-23236\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-large wp-image-23236\" src=\"http:\/\/jomec.co.uk\/cjsnews\/wp-content\/uploads\/IMG_0355-525x394.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"525\" height=\"394\" srcset=\"https:\/\/jomec.co.uk\/cjsnews\/wp-content\/uploads\/IMG_0355-525x394.jpg 525w, https:\/\/jomec.co.uk\/cjsnews\/wp-content\/uploads\/IMG_0355-150x113.jpg 150w, https:\/\/jomec.co.uk\/cjsnews\/wp-content\/uploads\/IMG_0355-163x122.jpg 163w, https:\/\/jomec.co.uk\/cjsnews\/wp-content\/uploads\/IMG_0355-768x576.jpg 768w, https:\/\/jomec.co.uk\/cjsnews\/wp-content\/uploads\/IMG_0355-620x465.jpg 620w, https:\/\/jomec.co.uk\/cjsnews\/wp-content\/uploads\/IMG_0355-120x90.jpg 120w, https:\/\/jomec.co.uk\/cjsnews\/wp-content\/uploads\/IMG_0355-100x75.jpg 100w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 525px) 100vw, 525px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-23236\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Coffee Planet on Newport Road in Cardiff sells reusable mugs and offers a discount for customers who bring their own mug.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Environmental organisations have welcomed calls for a levy.
