{"id":24755,"date":"2020-02-14T17:59:09","date_gmt":"2020-02-14T17:59:09","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/jomec.co.uk\/cjsnews\/?p=24755"},"modified":"2020-02-14T18:01:22","modified_gmt":"2020-02-14T18:01:22","slug":"brute-attack-on-police-during-mass-brawl-on-queen-street","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/jomec.co.uk\/cjsnews\/brute-attack-on-police-during-mass-brawl-on-queen-street\/","title":{"rendered":"\u201cBrute Attack\u201d on police during mass brawl on Queen Street"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<div>\n<p>A police officer told a court \u201che&#8217;d never seen such aggression\u201d in 15 years on the force, after a group of men including a student studying to join the service attacked a police constable. <br \/><br \/>A court heard how an officer was thrown to the ground during a mass brawl in Cardiff City Centre.\u00a0<br \/><br \/>Defendants Taylor Barnes, Jack Campbell, Joshua Husband and Lewis Russell \u2014 all aged\u00a0 20 or 21 \u2014 pleaded guilty to assaulting an emergency worker at Cardiff Magistrates Court this morning.<br \/><br \/>The fight took place at 4:25am on the 25th of January on Cardiff\u2019s Queen Street. The group of friends from Cardiff had been out celebrating Mr Russell\u2019s 21st birthday.\u00a0<br \/><br \/>The court heard how Barnes, Campbell, Husband and Russel were walking\u00a0along Queen Street when they saw three patrolling emergency officers.\u00a0<br \/><br \/>Their behaviour towards the officers became increasingly aggressive, and they began shouting \u201cwe pay your taxes\u201d and swearing at them.\u00a0<br \/><br \/>Mr Russell became violent towards one of the officers, and the confrontation quickly escalated. <br \/><br \/>Prosecutor Pete Cowan described the events a brawl, where officers were punched and spat out, many sustaining minor injuries. <br \/><br \/>\u00a0Significantly, Mr Husband was reported to have thrown PC Burns to the ground, before being tasered by the police.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>It was later revealed in proceedings that Mr Husband is currently in his second year of a professional policing and security degree at the University of South Wales. <br \/><br \/>Mr Husband\u2019s defence lawyer Mr Peter Harris told the court that Mr Husband had been attempting to defuse the situation, and after incident with PC Burns pleading with officers, \u201cI want to be one of you\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>CCTV footage taken from a Council camera was shown in court of the incident.\u00a0<br \/><br \/>Upon being arrested, the court heard that all four defendants were immediately apologetic and remorseful.\u00a0<br \/><br \/>In a victim personal statement read out by Mr Cowan, Sergeant Hawksley said that she had \u201cnot encountered a situation where all the individuals reacted with an unprecedented level of violence\u201d.\u00a0<br \/><br \/>The four men were lifelong friends,\u00a0had no previous convictions and were previously described as of \u201cgood character\u201d. <br \/><br \/>Presiding magistrate Sian Vaughn described the act as \u201ca brute attack\u201d, said that the men were \u201cequally responsible for what happened that night and the injuries caused to the officers\u201d.\u00a0<br \/><br \/>Just after 13:20 all four men were sentenced each to 200 hours of community service and \u00a3325 in fines including compensation to the officers that sustained minor injuries.\u00a0<\/p>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>A police officer told a court \u201che&#8217;d never seen such aggression\u201d in 15 years on the force, after a group of men including a student studying to join the service attacked a police constable.
