{"id":25203,"date":"2020-03-03T18:07:50","date_gmt":"2020-03-03T18:07:50","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/jomec.co.uk\/cjsnews\/?p=25203"},"modified":"2020-03-03T18:13:26","modified_gmt":"2020-03-03T18:13:26","slug":"facebook-group-to-help-women-walking-home-alone","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/jomec.co.uk\/cjsnews\/facebook-group-to-help-women-walking-home-alone\/","title":{"rendered":"Facebook group to help women walking home alone"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><strong>A woman from Cardiff wants to set up a Facebook group to help make walking home at night safer for women. <\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Twenty two year-old Sophie Miles works in Cardiff and, like many young women, says she doesn&#8217;t feel safe when walking home from the city centre at night. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>She noticed an increase in the number of posts from women on Facebook claiming they had been harassed and so came up with the idea of a group or Facebook chat.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" width=\"448\" height=\"394\" src=\"https:\/\/jomec.co.uk\/cjsnews\/wp-content\/uploads\/post-448x394.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-25229\" srcset=\"https:\/\/jomec.co.uk\/cjsnews\/wp-content\/uploads\/post-448x394.jpg 448w, https:\/\/jomec.co.uk\/cjsnews\/wp-content\/uploads\/post-150x132.jpg 150w, https:\/\/jomec.co.uk\/cjsnews\/wp-content\/uploads\/post-139x122.jpg 139w, https:\/\/jomec.co.uk\/cjsnews\/wp-content\/uploads\/post-102x90.jpg 102w, https:\/\/jomec.co.uk\/cjsnews\/wp-content\/uploads\/post.jpg 494w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 448px) 100vw, 448px\" \/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>The group would give people the opportunity to contact others walking alone on a night out or from work. They are encouraged to post or write a message to meet in a safe place so they can walk home as a larger group.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Sophie graduated from Cardiff University last year and said she wished something like this existed when she was out with friends.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote\"><p>&#8220;When I was in University I think I could&#8217;ve benefited from a similar thing. I was friends with a lot of people who enjoyed leaving early, which is fine. But then you&#8217;re always stuck because you don&#8217;t want to get a taxi on your own. You want to put your money towards other things.&#8221;<\/p><cite><br>Sophie Miles<\/cite><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>Cardiff Women&#8217;s Aid work to help women experiencing, escaping or at risk of any form of violence or abuse. They think the idea is a good one but it would only be a temporary solution.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Venice Fielding is from the charity. She said it&#8217;s great to see that women are looking out for each other but it puts the onus onto women to keep themselves safe rather than tackling the bigger problem of harassers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote\"><p>&#8220;In the long term, if we aren&#8217;t addressing male violence against women in a more structural sense, it can lead to victim blaming.<\/p><p>&#8220;So Why didn&#8217;t she use the buddy system?
