Youth rugby team can’t play after vandalism in Tremorfa

20 January 2017

St Albans Rugby Club had to cancel training sessions for their under 11 and under 7 teams because of vandalism at Tremorfa Park.

The rugby posts at the pitch have been destroyed, as well as the barriers around the pitch.

The club is part of a sports centre run by volunteers and is partly funded by National Lottery Funds as well as Cardiff City Council.

St Albans, nicknamed “the Buns”, have had a number of problems over the past year and their men’s teams have had to cancel games due to litter on this pitch in the park.

A spokesperson for the club who asked not to be named says “vandalism remains a dark cloud over the club.”

“Understandably, with safety paramount, parents and youngsters often look outside the area for their sport.  The Buns have a great history and story, a small number of mindless vandals seem determined to undermine and threaten its position in the Community.

The park has had many problems with similar issues in the past. Tony Howe, who lives nearby, says:

“There’s not much that we can do about it, the police are running low. There’s problems here like there’s problems everywhere else.”

But the St Albans spokesman says “we are willing to work proactively with Cardiff Council, local politicians, schools, police, Community and the local press to promote the Club and discourage vandalism.

“The vandals must not be allowed to win.”
