The food we eat has a huge impact on us, our health, communities, farmers, businesses and most importantly the nature.

Sales of healthy green vegetables in Britain continue to decrease according to the latest reports by the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs. Eighty percent of children are not eating enough vegetables. But this week, Cardiff was declared number one Veg City in Wales. Veg Cities will be a feature campaign of Sustainable Food Cities from mid-2018. It will support cities, counties and boroughs to take local action to increase availability of veg and increase consumption.

Vegetables are a great source of vitamins, minerals and fiber, and are an important part of a healthy, balanced diet. Eating plenty of vegetables helps keep us healthy and may reduce the risk of disease and some cancers.
Food organizations like Green City and Food Cardiff are working hard to increase people’s consumption of vegetables in Cardiff.
It’s not just about improving everyone’s well being and quality of life and reaching their highest potential but it’s about making decisions that protect and improve our natural environment. They aim to make decisions that help the economy flourish and support social progress.

They are trying to help people change the way they produce, buy, use and prepare food to improve the quality of their lives. Food Cardiff hold regular workshops for young kids to teach them how to integrate more plant based food in their diets and give tips on how to start their mini gardens.

They encourage buying local foods because a thriving local economy means local jobs for local people. Local, seasonal food is the freshest produce you can buy because it doesn’t have to travel far. That means it needs less packaging too. This organization works with school, communities , restaurants to better a better and informed choice about food.

Sustainability is about finding the best balance. It’s about understanding how the decisions we make are connected to our own well being.
