Reduced Womanhood?

Hundreds were attracted to a play which aims to raise more awareness towards older women and which opened this week in the Chapter Arts Centre. This local play acting by six women from Cardiff is called Reduced Womanhood.

Michael Corbidge, the writer from the Royal Shakespeare Company came from London to support his own work. So this time, Michael Corbidge picked six local women working in different areas in Cardiff to tell real stories of older women.

Six women share a series of intensified, concentrated moments. It is a jigsaw piece in their own lifescape. An arc across years of being, decades of existence. ”It’s Honest. It’s Brutal. It’s Funny. It’s True.” The director believes that these elements are magnified moments that every woman has.

Reduced Womanhood which opens at Chapter Arts on Tues May 9th contains series of monologues for 6 Women. Scenes  tell the stories of dementia, empty next syndrome more. Michael Corbidge, the writer of this play, is championing the cause of older women on stage who seem to get a bit left behind by writers. He appeals: We should let more women on stage!

Michael Corbidge said that he is very connected to one story, the Syndrome one, because it is the story of his mom. He was raised in a big family where he has four brothers and when the time they all left home and went to chase their own lives, his mom had to face the pain of losing her children. In that generation, he said, children are everything to their mother so some women lost the meaning and the purpose of life once they stop being a mom. Then, the question of identity rised in Michael’s head and helps him to write down this monologue.

Actors are all from different careers and they cherish a lot of this chance to join the stage and show the power of womanhood. Research shows that population ageing is a global trend that is changing societies around the world and the crew of this play believe that it is time for neglect and abuse of older women to be make visible and made to end.
