Cardiff is the cultural beating heart of a nation. From national museums to internationally famous sport stadiums, Cardiff is an outward looking city with an authentic indie soul. Therefore it is fitting that in the land of song the live music scene is probably one of the most vibrant in the UK with venues to sate all musical hunger and desires. In the backrooms of little cafes to purpose built music venues, the strains of new and well-worn tunes can be heard drifting across the city creating a beat all of its own. The choice can seem overwhelming.
Here, we will try to help by nominating our top five live music venues to visit in 2020.
1. Clwb Ifor Bach
The obvious place to start. Often considered the birthplace of new Welsh music, this venue has been at the heart of Cardiff’s live music scene for almost forty years. Playing host to the likes of the Super Furry Animals, Gwenno Saunders, Gorky’s Zygotic Mynci and Cerys Matthews’ Catatonia, Clwb was at the centre of Cool Cymru. More recently this 380 capacity venue has staged acts from all around the world and is considered an important stepping stone to cracking the UK market. A must visit venue.
2. Tramshed
The new kid on the block. The Tramshed, an arts and music venue housed in a historic tram depot, has quickly established itself on the Cardiff music scene. Renowned for its eclectic music booking, from grime to old school house and everything in between. No two nights in the Tramshed are ever the same. With Napalm Death and Lil Mosey already confirmed in the new year, it looks like this 1,000 capacity venue it going to continue to go from strength to strength.
3. Fuel
The raucous upstart. Holding the distinction of Cardiff’s only dedicated rock and metal live venue, Fuel Rock Club lies in the heart of Womanby Street. With one off gigs to metal all-dayers confirmed for 2020, Fuel has all of your alternative music desires catered for. Especially look out for the homecoming of Godsticks, one of Wales’ most idiosyncratic purveyors of new prog. Though it may be loud and slightly unkempt, this little venue has a welcoming community of rockers. A must visit for people who prefer their music dialled up to eleven.
4. The Motorpoint Arena
The big one. Cardiff’s largest multi-purpose music space often plays home to the more established acts touring the UK. From The 1975 to Stormzy, some of the biggest acts around will be play this arena in 2020. There is something for everyone in this blank canvas.
5. The Bootlegger
The soul of a community. This slice of prohibition era Americana offers a more laid back vibe than most live venues, with its own heady mix of jazz, soul and folk. This sophisticated speakeasy will have you enjoying all the illicit fun of live music and hard liquor. All without the fear of Eliot Ness breaking down the door at any moment.
All these venues are safe and caring spaces, with dedicated policies for acceptable behaviour. So stay safe and enjoy Cardiff’s indie vibe.
