Newport was the worst place in Wales for traffic congestion in 2017, according to traffic analytics firm Inrix
Congestion in Newport was worse than other major cities including Leeds, Liverpool and Glasgow, the figures show.
Inrix also estimated the total cost of congestion across Wales was more than £1.8bn in 2017 and in Cardiff alone, drivers lost more than £1,000 in time and fuel that year.
Leroy Hutchinson, who is a driver for Dragon Taxis in Newport says the city needs a relief road.
“Newport is terrible. It’s one way in and one way out. They need to build a relief road. There is speculation all the time, but nothing happens.”
There are controversial plans to build a relief road around Newport. However, even if the route is given the go-ahead, it would not be fully operational until 2023.
Aside from Newport, the other places in the top five congested areas in Wales, based on how much time drivers spent in traffic, were Cardiff, Wrexham, Pentir in Gwynedd, Deganwy in Conwy and Bridgend.
