Appeal for new postmaster to save Tongwynlais service

6 March 2018

People in Tongwynlais are worried they will be without a crucial service as the local post office is set to close.

The current postmaster has handed in his notice because of ill health and the post office is due to close on March 17 unless someone else steps in.

Four local councillors have launched an appeal for someone to take over, but so far no-one has responded.

The next nearest post office will be more than a 30-minute walk away in Taff’s Well, with concerns over the impact on elderly people.

In a statement, the Post Office apologised to customers for the inconvenience caused and are encouraging someone to take over the Tongwynlais branch.

Conservative Councillor for Tongwynlais, Mike Jones-Pritchard is one of the four councillors who started a petition to save the post office, but acknowledged it would be difficult.

He said: “I think the income from this Post Office is something like £6,500 a year so it’s not something that is sustainable.”

Margret Steele from Tongwynlais said: “Where can we go now for a post office? If it’s Whitchurch or Taff’s Well, then you have to get a bus.”

Another resident, Paul Jones said: “It will have a detrimental effect on the old people. It’s just not good for the community.”
