Barry’s longest running business to close after 127 years

1 March 2019

The present owner of a DIY shop in Barry says he’s sad it’s closing after more than a century of business in the town.

The future of Silver Star DIY is uncertain after the business’s landlords, Associated British Ports sold the site.

When the lease runs out at the end of March, the shop will close with owner David Sylvester still looking for new premises.

Mr Sylvester told CJS News:”Obviously we’re saddened by it because of the time we’ve been in the town, our very loyal customers and very loyal staff.

The business has been in his family since the 1890s and has seen through lifetimes of change.

Yesterday, the Vale of Glamorgan Council approved plans to build two blocks of flats that will include 80 affordable homes on the site.
