Campaigner says Cardiff’s oldest train station at risk

One of Wales’ oldest railway stations is in danger of being left to ruin, according to campaigners.

Save Bute Street Railway Station, are calling on Cardiff City Council and the Welsh Government to do more to save the historic building.

The railway station has recently featured in The Victorian Society’s ten most endangered Victorian-era buildings in England and Wales.

Several attempts to redevelop the building as a museum showcasing the Bay’s history have failed because of funding.

Campaigners say the historically important building will be a great loss to the rich heritage of Cardiff Bay if it isn’t saved soon.

Tim Richards (pictured) from Save Bute Street Station says he’s surprised that the Welsh Government hasn’t done more to revive the building through regeneration funding.

“What kind of introduction to the National Assembly is it when you get off the train and see this dump of a very old and very historic railway station?

“It’s dreadful and a shame that the old station is something that everyone seems to ignore.”

Built in the 1840s, the railway station played a key role in the transportation of coal from the pits of the South Wales Valleys to Cardiff’s docks.
